Snake Deterring Plants

Image
Hello fellow gardeners. I have recently moved to the country side and got the yard trimmed. Today to my surprise I saw a giant cobra slither in from the neighbours yard.Aside from cleaning the grass clipping and debris, is it true that marigolds and snake plants are the best deterrent? And if so, does it make a difference if they’re potted? Or better to plant. TIA

Planting in Pots vs Into the Earth

Image
Has anyone considered what the consequences are for the Earth as a living environment being denied a return of resources/nourishment by the popularity of container gardening?I understand not everyone has the available space to plant directly into the Earth and container gardening isn't something I'm against... We as a species have been attempting to keep our food safe from others for far too long to completely discontinue the practice and No-one is looking to dismantle anyone's greenhouseI'm just curious if anyone has thought about what we might be giving up as far as future resources being replenished that we use currently like natural oil that takes things dying and decomposing over long periods of time to eventually create. We've certainly seen movements to plant things other than green lawn grass in our yardsHopefully this question doesn't seem too sophomoric to be taken seriously 😏

Growing hot peppers this late in the season...

Image
I'm 44 but have never rocked a garden, lol! Anyway, been meaning to grow some hot peppers for years and have just not gotten around to it. This was another year I was going to let slip by. Anyway, my spice tolerance has grown such that I really need some fresh reapers/scorpions, etc in my life. Is there any way I can make this happen? I live in KS. It's likely to remain relatively toasty for a couple more months. Totally willing to buy seedlings/plants. I would really like to do this in pots/bags, keeping things as simple as possible. Any recommendations are welcome. Again, must stress, total newb here.

New 15m x 12m Garden, Blank Slate, Looking for Ideas

Image
Hi /r/gardening hope you're all doing good.Lucky me managed to secure a primo new new to me property with a lovely large garden. Here's the sat-view with some mark-up to make more sense of it. It's at 52.3° North, in the Northwest UK, and pretty close (<1.5miles) to the coast. My ideal spot.Decently average rainfall, sun-hours above average and in a semi sheltered spot from the prevailing winds. Temps are between lows of 0° to 10° in winter and 10° to 20°+ in summer. Very dry of late however.Garden is pretty much flat but with a gentle rise to the back of only around 40 to 50cm overall.Soil is ... TBC, not moved in yet, but the site used to be allotments. Currently turf of some hardy coastal type. Doesn't appear to be growing in a big hurry. The access is via the little path between the N and the arrow on my map, otherwise it's through the house. Tricky to get a tonne bag of conditioned compost in there directly for example, but I'm able bodied enough to use

Dealing with curling leaves

Image
It's been a bit hot lately and my bamboos and shrubs have had their leaves curling. I know they do it to protect their leaves but it's been 2 days and they haven't recovered yet.I also recently fertilised them so I'm not sure if it's the heat or that I over fertilised them. Any advice on what to do next?

Anybody know what this is? Found at my work among the Rhododendrons.

Any luck growing plants/vegetables/fruit in the shade?

Image
I have a section of the backyard that is about 15m long and 1.50m wide. It sits between a shed and a fence. Unfortunately, it gets next to no sun (especially during winter), maybe one hour in summer as the sun is higher for longer.Any suggestions on what I can utilise the area for?I'm thinking about using some of it for a compost pile section. but open to either plants (preferably ones that are good for pollinators) or growing produce for the remainder.

My very first Plum Tomato… I’m so sorry plant. The heatwave killed all the leaves 😭 Daddy’s still proud of this pepper sized 2 inch tomato. Does excess water ripen the fruit, I was hoping it’d get a little bigger before dropping.

Climbing roses advice

Image
Hello! Beginner gardener here looking for some tips on growing rose wall climbers. I live in a semi-detached dormer home and want to grow them on the front of the house. We get tons of sunlight at the front in the afternoon but not so much in the morning. I'll need some pots to plant the roses and also some trellises for the wall.I've read a fair bit about looking after them through the changing seasons. Any help would be much appreciated!

Tomato plants very behind. What to do with them?

Saw this on Facebook this morning. I get the idea of providing a place for pollinators and proliferating native flora. But isn’t this a bit messy? I mean it makes the house look like it’s abandoned imo anyway.

Gardening beginner question: Wall-friendly vines

Image
Hey everyone, first time posting here so i hope this is the correct place. My girlfriend and I moved into an apartment last fall, and now that I'm done with university I finally wanted to make the place a comfy living space. The apartment is rather old (lots of wood, sandstone etc.) and so is its balcony. The place is very barren and "cold" at the moment, so I'm tackling this one first. My ideal vision would be some plants like tomatoes, lavender, bell-peppers etc. These are not my concern since I used to help out my mom with exactly those kinds of plants. Now the wall of the balcony is pretty ugly and empty. I'd love to have some kind of vine or climbing plant to green up the space. The problem is that I'm a little bit worried about the balcony/building. As explained, it's a pretty old "rustic" balcony. I'm worried that the plants could potentially cause serious damage to the structure, because I've seen that before. The wooden parts have

Low maintenance plants to prevent overgrowth

Image
Hi, I have acquired a small (2000m2 rectangle) plot of ex-farmland in South Western France and would like to avoid it looking overgrown and messy in the coming years. I only visit 2-3 times a year (mainly in the summer months) so would like any advice on a low/no maintenance plant/tree that could be planted here to help keep the area looking reasonable. I'm not interested in crops for profit, my top priority is for the area to effectively look after itself and not look messy! Maybe an orchard of draught-resistant trees?Thank you so much 😊

We're still in July and my pumpkin is already big and orange, do you think is getting ready for harvest soon?
