Gardening as a hobby

Image
Hi! I’ve been wanting to start gardening as a hobby, I love plants, flowers and I remember growing my first orange at the age of 7 which turned out to be very delicious. I live in the middle east, a subtropical area. It gets very hot in the summer, around 45 degree Celsius max. and moderately cold in winters, as low as 15-20 degree Celsius min., I know nothing about gardening, however, I like to educate myself in landscaping and botany and especially about the types I want to plant. I’d appreciate resources and advice from experienced individuals around here. Thank you.

Is it a bad idea to encourage foxes?

Image
I’m designing the back garden at our new house, and planning to include a 4 sq m wildlife pond, vegetable garden, pollinator garden, 2 apple trees and 2 pear trees. It is a small garden (12x6 m), but I want it packed with as much food and wildlife as possible. We have foxes roaming the neighborhood, so I was thinking of building them a den under a berm in the middle of the garden, and planting it with flowers for the pollinators. Would this arrangement be safe for the foxes and for us? Could I still work in the garden and let my kids play outside while the foxes are using the den? Would this lead to the foxes becoming too comfortable around humans? Please let me know if this is a good idea or not. Thanks!

Huge white fly infestation on Ligustrum trees😬 I eventually cut them back after finding out how unsuccessful dishsoap spray was. I don't want to cut back the whole tree and have been given Lime Sulphur. Has anyone used it before? It really stinks😖

Two smallish snails have decided to inhabit the pot of my maiden hair fern, which has recently been saved from near death after been dehydrated for a while. I’m not very well informed on snails, so are they cool or should I evict them? (Don’t mind the moss)

What Are These on My Celosia?

Image
I had two celosia in urns in front of my door all summer and about a week ago I noticed one started to look wilted. I brought them both inside for the winter a couple of days ago, gave them some food and put them under a grow light, hoping that would help. It hasn't and tonight I noticed these all over the soil and some of the lower leaves of the wilted one. Does anyone know what they are?https://ift.tt/dczp759 https://ift.tt/LyvoOiV https://ift.tt/pAWukDg

For those who use neem oil for pest control, help? I am not a fan, but it might be user-error on my part.

Image
Aghhh neem oil seems to bring more headache than relief to my garden woes. I’ve used it to help control thrips and mites on my roses and other flowering perennials/annuals.First qualm: it seems to attract mites after a treatment. Thoughts?Second: I can’t seem to find a middle ground between over-saturating and not spraying enough neem on the leaves. Any tips or tricks to get it right?Thank you so much.

leeks growing directly from flower head - wha'?

Image
Many months ago I planted the bottoms of two grocery store leeks. Eventually both flowered. One of them is doing the normal going to seed. The other one grew these slim green tendrils. Today I pulled off one of the tendrils at its base, and it's bulb shaped at the bottom. There were about 20 in varying heights from 1/2" to 2". I've planted them in a pot, maybe they'll turn into leeks, or not. But I'm curious if anyone has ever seen this, is it unusual or common?

I think this is a Cereus Cactus. Is it? How do i take care of it during winter? I live in denver, Co and it expected to be a cold winter in the 0 F this year. But it already grew triple the size and i live in a small condo with very little light indoors, almost no direct light.

Help with potatoes please.

Image
Hi there! Very amateur gardener here looking for some advice about potatoes.I planted some main crop potatoes in late May. The plants seem to have grown really well through the summer. Flowers have bloomed, died off and bloomed again.I read that I should cut down the foliage once it starts to yellow and die back, and harvest a weeks or so later. So I’m 4 months in and the plants look as healthy as ever. Do I carry on waiting? Or cut back based on the timeframe?

Has anyone experience with growing mini lemons / Snack Lemons?

Image
I bought some "Snack Lemons" from a store a while ago and decided to grow the seeds. ( This is what they are: https://ift.tt/zeojZSb )They have been growing pretty slow, but I don't have access to good light, soil or fertiliser right now.I'm moving internationally soon and have to consider if brining a few seedlings with me is worth the trouble.Has anyone tried growing these before? How likely is it that they grow true to seed? Does anybody know if the cultivar name and if it's possible to buy it?I would love to train these into bonsai. Having them grow the miniature lemons would just look amazing. I know companies want to sell their special fruit, so even a suggestion to a different kind with the same look would be helpful. Thanks in advance : )

How to grow paw paw trees

Image
So my mom has become enamored with the idea of growing paw paw trees in her new back yard. She lives in SW Pennsylvania in a Pittsburgh suburb for climate. I know next to nothing about gardening, I just wanna help make my mom happy, so figured someone here may be able to help? She’s got about an acre that’s pretty open and gets direct sun, plenty of woods nearby to supply bugs/bees if that matters. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to go about making this work, where to buy the trees, what variety, how to make them not die etc? Thanks in advance

My lemon-gardenia is blooming. I asked an old guy who knows how to graft to do this for me, he found it ridiculous. We were both shocked that it worked. The blooms smell early on, the fragrance goes away after a day. Also its a 10000 times easier than a gardenia
