Wintering question

Image
I invested in some palms for my deck and yard this year and I don’t think they will survive a NJ winter in containers. I don’t have room for them for the in the house other than in a storage room without light/windows. Do you think they would be OK if I put them in the storage room with a grow light on for 8 hours a day throughout the winter months? It’s pretty warm in there.

Store bought paprika seeds are magic? Or toxic?

Image
I have had a small 1cm leaf and few centimeter plant propagation i had stolen from the plant store(the tropical monstera something something was like 30 euros) for about a year now and it has never grown bigger- not brown nor unhappy, just not growing. Now i put in a store paprika-seed in and they grew both enormous in a few weeks. Ehhh how? Is it the paprika? Is it the store speed-riping chemicals? Wtf?

Summer veggies finally starting to come in 🥳

Will pruning Annabelle hydrangeas reduce leggy-ness?

Image
Hi! I purchased some Annabelle hydrangeas at the beginning of the season, however they are extremely leggy (2 gallon sized). The blooms have come in and, as predicted, are so large the stems are falling and snapping, even with staking and supporting. If I sacrifice the rest of this season’s blooms and prune/pinch them back now, will this help them become fuller and thicker for next year, as opposed to remaining tall/scraggly? I don’t care for long stems, I would much rather thickness! Regardless, they look really unsightly right now as they are tall, flopped over and falling off the trellis supports. I wouldn’t mind cutting their season short this year to build a foundation.

Perlite vs kitty Litter?

Image
I’ve had a friend recommend using kitty litter in place of perlite for good drainage. I’ve never heard of this but they claim it’s better since it’s cheaper. Has anyone else heard of this?

Anyone ever use Bio-fiber ?

Image
Anyone use this stuff before? Heres my story with it so farI was at Home Depot they didn’t have all the options they normally have - i saw this stuff it said peat alternative i was thinking maybe coir(which i use alot) and the bag didnt say anything out of the norm but i looked it up while mixing a batch of soil and its made from composted corn husks. If im correct it’s supposed to hold 7x the water then normal soil. So i mix a batch 1.5cf of bio fiber .5 cubic foot raised bed conditioner ( blood meal kelp etc m compost) 3 gallons each of homemade compost and coast of maine lobster compost 7 gallons of peat and i added the only perlite i have which is mother earth #4 size (about 8 gallons maybe more ) which is huge and I’m having problems - water gets sucked in quick & drains but its like mud when u touch it .maybe more perlite? Im trying to use this mix for a sweet potato grow in a shopping cart (likes a nice light fluffy soil). If I’m right it was $11.27 a 1.5 cuft bag @ HD

Hi! Garden newbie here. I have two pots like this on my front porch, and I'm wondering what I should plant in them! My parameters in order of priority are: (1) Looks good year round, and (2) Doesn't require too much maintenance (for reference, I water my indoor pothos biweekly. Located in the PNW!

Planting advice please

Image
I have two large planters with a climbing rose, clematis and chives in each one. What bulbs could I plant for each season in front of those plants?I was thinking crocuses, snowdrops, tulips, daffodils and something else for autumn. I have no idea what would look nice, advice needed.

Found a couple of tomatoes in this state, what could it be? The others looks ok for now.

Pachysandra Phytophthora

Image
Hello, last year I bought A lot of pachysandra that were infected with phytophthora. Now almost all were wilting and rotting, So I removed them completely.I also have some fruit trees and schrubs that are able to be infected with phytophthora but are not yet. Is there a way to combat the fungal in the soil before reaching the other plants? Most information I find are prevention before planting or when the plants are allready infected. The most information I find is also about potatos and tomatos, not shrubs and trees. I have Hydrogen Peroxide, but cannot find sufficient information about soil drenching it. I also have Copperoxychloride, but again no information about soil drenching (also highly toxic, so I do not think this is an option) Does anyone have other ways to combat the fungus. If possible biologic.

My Bell Pepper buds are falling off

Image
I'm in need of help.I'm a first year gardener when it comes to bell peppers.Started them from seed for Familie and friends.Everyone who recieved plants from me so far can watch their peppers grows while mine keep dropping their buds, so i know it's an issue on my end.I know it's not because of the soil, because my chillis are just fine. They get a very good amount of sunlight throughout the day.I've been giving them them extra nutriants/fertilizer once a week to help them out in case that was an issue but still nothing. It has been pretty hot where i am lately Between 30°C and 38°C (between 86 and 100 fahrenheit) so i think that could maybe be an issue, but i make sure to water them enough. My soil is moist but not wet.I don't know what else i could be missing.I really want them to work out
