Mildew smell in soil

Image
I'm planting a garden in a patch of land that was previously paved. Under the tiles is a layer of sand, below that some sort of landfill (old bricks and roof tiles, plastic cups, iron scraps) and below that very thick, dense soil. I've just dug a hole to see what I'm working with. The soil smells mildewy, like an old attic. What is the best here? Take out the bricks and dig through the sand and soil to mix and air them up? Or just throw new potting soil and seeds on there and hope that the plants roots take care of it? I don't want to unearth dangerous gases but I do want to create a very healthy soil.

Are snake plants typically fast growers? Can they handle full sun?

Image
I'm planning on planting my snake plants in a line along a tight 3.5" section of dirt between my fence and the pavement which i've seen others do but i don't know anything about them except that they are 'easy' to care for. Are snake plants fast growers? Will they be fine in a very sunny position?

An invasion of tomato plants last year in our yard

Image
Hi there! Last year I noticed something weird was happening in our yard. Very weird. To be precise, there were tomato plants growing in all kinds of places. Didn't cover anywhere remotely near the entire yard but were certainly noticeable. In gardens, small fruit orchards (a place where we have strawberries, raspberries and such),in terrible soil close to the outside WC, even in pots. What did in the world happen? I can't remember this ever occuring before on this scale at least. And there was quite a large distance between the two furthest occurences. Me and my family are also not the type of people who commonly eat outdoors and don't eat too many tomatoes anyway. It's worth noting it wasn't an exactly unique case though given there was a year recently when mulberries were doing a similar thing due to me happening to have some of it here. Still, I can't remember any sprouts of it appearing last year even though there were more than enough mulberry fruits around,

The bees and wasps are enjoying the flowers just as much as I am

Preferred Berry Plant Distributor?

Image
I was looking to get a jump on the berry (and veggie seed) hunt this year. There's so many places online. Looking for mainly blueberry, raspberry, blackberry. I have heard mention of Noursefarms and Willis Orchard. Any other recommendations?

When to give up in ungerminated seeds

Image
I planted seedlings on Jan 8 (indoors) and am seeing poor germination for my peppers, kale, and cabbage. Is it typical for these to be slow to germinate? It’s been 3 weeks since planting.Should I give them a little more time, or should I start some replacements this weekend?peppers: planted 25 (5 each of 5 different varieties) and I only have 3 seedlings (each of a different variety) so far. Initially these were on a heat pad, but I took them off once the first plants germinated. I’ve put them back on the heat pad as of this morning.kale and cabbage: planted 36 and have zero seedlings so far. These have not been on the heat pad at all.sweet peas: planted 12 and 10 have germinated.coleus: planted 6 cells with a few seeds each. All of these have germinated.

Any idea what this could be? My dogs were sniffing it in the backyard. No smell, almost jelly-like.

Can you help me out?

Hello everyone,I hope this post is allowed, otherwise feel free to delete it! I am a Greek student in Sweden studying marketing and I am doing research related to community gardens, more specifically how community gardens act as spaces for citizens to express resistance to urbanization and food culture. As part of the research project I need to interview people who are active members in the community gardens and could give me more information related to community gardens, the overall community and in general your experiences when it comes to community gardens, why you do it, etc. Please send me a message or leave a comment if you are interested in helping me by sharing your experience with me! Thank you in advance!

So let me start off by saying I’m just a beginner

With that being said, I currently have two issues.-Issue number one, I just made my first raised garden bed all the seedlings I’ve put into it are all gone the next morning something has eating them, but I haven’t seen any bugs or animals in the area. What can I do to protect them? - my second issue is the seedlings in my humidity dome seem to be reaching and I don’t know why whenever I put them into my Hydro set up they seem to be doing really well except for the ones that decided to stretch out their stems. Can I fix that? Or how can I prevent it?

Do seedlings need warm temperature 24h?

Image
Hi, I bought some seeds, because i want to grow a few kinds of hot pepper in our living room. I read online that I can sprout them in a mini greenhouse , to keep the temperature relatively high. During the nights, we keep our thermostat low so temperature drops to 10-14 C/ 50 - 57 F in this time of year. Can the seedlings cope with that, or do I need to invest in a heat mat for instance?

Nerine Sarniensis soil to sand ratio?

Image
Few days ago i bought a large container with 50cm effective diameter and 43cm height with 60l max capacity. I also bought a movable tray with wheels.I intend to add a layer of small rocks/pebbles in order to improve drainage further. As far so soil goes i purchased 50l of premium soil mixture with added clay, but no sand, which is supposedly good for drainage for Sariensis and Nerine x Amaryllis hybrids.I have quartz sand for construction in 2-5mm granulation, but i don't to know the specific ratio when mixing it with soil.I intend to plant:Nerine SarniensisNerine Sarniensis x Amaryllis (?)Nerine BowdeniiNerine Bowdenii x AmaryllisI would love to add/change some of these with plants from Lycoris genus, but as far as i know they only bloom for 2 weeks (Radiata) and there's insufficient amount of information about other plants in this genus.Another question i have is about their root depth - considering the container is so tall, the roots should have more than enough space to dev

In addition to flowers, we used to sell seeds. We have some old seeds left. But they grow well too. I decided to try my hand at growing microgreens. Grows well. In the future, I think I can grow microgreens. I am glad that Japanese cabbage was the first to grow.

Crop reccomendations for first time gardener

Image
So I moved into my first home ever last year right before spring and didn't get a chance to start a garden and I really wanted to get one going this year. I've got a decently sized yard and live in the north eastern part of the United States. So very cold winters and hot Summers. Ideally I'd like to have crops that will come back year after year. This is my first time trying to grow vegetables at this scale, I've only ever grown herbs on my counter or chili peppers. Also reccomendations for keeping a very dig happy dog out of my garden would be much appreciated.Thank you!

I will kill you gnats.

Voles?

Image
So I think I have a vole problem right now. Just happened to look at my front yard now that the snow melted a bit, and I’m like oh god there are little holes everywhere. My lawn looks like crap. My neighbors is fine! My question is I had my lawn treated this year for grubs. (He doesn’t get any treatments that o know of). Could there be some relation? Or maybe it’s not voles at all?I’d post a pic but of course it snowed overnight 🤨

How can i prevent my plant from dying? or is this normal?
