What shrubs should I plant under a young tree that will someday provide a lot of shade but is currently full sun?

Image
Last year I planted a white oak. It’s only 10 feet tall right now, but I do want something other than grass under and around it. Right now the area is full sun, but I know at some point (15 years??) it will be shady, which obviously is a different environment. Do I just plant for now and rip the shrubs out later (trying not to damage the oak’s roots)? Only plant things with shallow roots? Are there good shrubs that do well with both sun and shade for my zone (close by I deliberately planted a dogwood that does well in both sun and the shade of oaks in particular). What is the standard practice here?I’m in zone five with a strong preference for evergreen shrubs (so, conifers basically) if anyone has any recommendations.

Any idea what this tool is for or even what it is called?

Germinating tomato and pepper seeds, got hot for a few hours

Image
Are they trashed? They got up to 95 to 100 (I had them in moist paper towel in ziplocs) for 3-ish hours. I've got it down below 90 now, but will they be any good, or should I start over. TIA!

Can I use the soil from the forest for my tomatoes , strawberries in the balcony? I already have the pots , just need the soil.

Trellis or twine for tomatoes?

Image
I have leftover welded wire and t posts I used to make a dog run. The wire is 5 ft and I have a spot that gets full sun until 5:30, then dappled sun until sundown, which is like 8 for us. I'm in zone 8 in Fort Worth. I've never had a whole lot of luck with tomatoes in my native AZ but I'm excited to try my hand again in a new state.Either way I only want to do one plant as the humidity has me worried about disease and I will likely have one central stem and get rid of all the suckers - so I'll be doing the twining method regardless.I wouldn't have to buy anything more to go the trellis route whereas with the string method I'd have to purchase 2 pvc elbows a length of rebar and possibly landscaping staples but I'm not sold on the necessity of that last one. But anyways! Not much.I do want to reuse this setup for cucumbers, peas, beans, perhaps a nasturtium or another nice vining flower in the future so please weigh that into your vote. I especially would lik

How to i get rid of bees (preferably without killing)?

Image
I have compost bin in my garden. I just checked it 2 days ago and there was nothing wrong. Today, i saw few bees hovering around it so i opened it and there was 1000s n 1000s of honey bees. I put few remains of watermelon there, could that be the reason? Now, how do i get rid of it? Bug sprays will likely kill them but is there any other method?

Best plants for seaside

Image
Hi All,I'm hoping to move to the seaside in the next few years, we have a site and planning has just passed. I would love to plant some trees and bushes now so by the time we move they have grown a bit.As its seaside I know the salt air and wind can make it hard for some plant to grow. I really like the idea of having something colourful like cherry blossom trees, red leaf maple or something like Giant pink mophead Hydrangea. My question is, how likely is it these would grow/survive in these conditions? Or would anyone have any suggestions of something colourful I could plant that could survive? The ground is not too sandy and the field has been used for crops previously. Many thanks in advance ☺️

My lemon tree grew another tree out of its roots?

Basically the title, I'm asking if it ie possible, and if so, what is the speed of the growth? Is it faster/slower than planting a lemon tree cutting?

Fun with carrot breeding for everyone. Easy and simple using supermarket carrots!

Image
This is mainly for fun, if you want to try selective plant breeding. Especially for helping get children interested in gardening by turning it into a fun? science? experiment.Take some supermarket carrots and cop off the ends with the leaves. Put these ends in a shallow dish of water, lightly pressed into potting soil, or pressed into the soil of your garden. Eat the other parts of the carrots.Success of failure doesn't matter, you're making use of something that you would have thrown out.If these grow then they will eventually set seed you can collect. Plant the carrot seeds in pots or your garden. You will likely get a big variety of different shapes, sizes and colours of carrot. Cut off the ends of the carrots you like the look of and plant those ends, but don't plant any of the carrot ends from the carrots you don't like. Eventually, you could breed a white carrot this way, or make your carrots tend towards orange more frequently. You will get so much carrot seed th

Will these air plants grow more leaves? The rest of the "bulb layers" got black from watering and turned to mush, so this is what was left. It has been weeks. Thanks!

Planting pokeweed intentionally as an edible perennial?

Image
Hey,I live in rural France where it grows wild in some cities/areas. Not a "native" European plant. It's actually already colonised a camp site 3km from my farm...I was wondering what people think of planting in a/my forest garden as an edible perennial (which i could chop and drop). Is this a ridiculous idea?thanks for your feedback

Question for those who vegetable garden with a variety of wildlife... advice please.

Image
I'm in Michigan, zone 6a and will be planting my first in ground vegetable garden. I will be contending with deer, turkey, racoons, opossum, squirrels and lots of birds. If I put up a deer fence around my garden, does it still need bird netting? Should there be a chicken wire hoop "roof" around the beds?I'm not sure what degree of protection I need.Advice? Suggestions? What works for you? Thanks.
