Pruning Huge Rhododendron

Image
Hey guys!I got a Rhododendron about 3m wide, 7m long, 3m tall. I want to prune it down to about 1,5 - 2m meter wide. Is it possible and if so, how should I do it?My dad says that is impossible but he doesn't like change isn't trustworthy. ;D

Balcony garden ideas?

Image
Hey guys, I’m a student living in NZ, who currently only has access to my appartment balcony, a small area around 5x5m, to set up a garden to grow some of my own food. Also contemplating setting up a quail hutch, to process some of my food waste and provide a touch of domestic meat (hunt for the rest of my protein). Starting the garden because food costs are going nuts here in NZ (1 sweet potato is $8, a broccoli is $3.50, a pepper is $2.50 each, and a whole organic chicken is $35). Going to be buying 4-5 x 120L pots, what are some really easy to grow, calorie dense crops that don’t require too much effort. Have some experience with gardens, mum and grandmother have huge ones at home, but never started one from scratch myself. Cheers guys.

I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder.

First timer gardener with single raised bed 😇

Image
So I recently moved to an appartment with a 4m2 terrace and 10m2 garden. I’m thinking to start my first urban garden using a single raised bed. Do you have any suggestions on layout planting? And any mistakes I should avoid as a first timer? Thankssss

For those of you starting your gardening journey.

Homeowner faces £6,000 bill after bamboo took over his home https://ift.tt/vzO07V3, I know it's the daily mail and no doubt they've taken some liberties with the reporting but, I was tasked with getting rid of bamboo on a property. Ended up getting a mini digger and removing most of the beds and lawns. It can grow a shoot for years before coming up for air.

I've never grown a plant in my life but want to start a vegetable garden this spring. I have some questions!

Image
My hardiness zone is 5b. I live in the woods, but I think I could find some spots on my property with full sun in some clearings. We have a pretty tall fence around the back to keep larger animals out already. We do have a lot of squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, birds (including wild turkeys), and chipmunks. If I have to use an area outside of the fence for direct sunlight, there are deer, coyotes, and foxes in the area. I don't even know what animals are bad for gardens, honestly. I'm not sure what kind of soil I have (my gardener coworker asked me when I mentioned this project). Maybe Clay? I'll probably just use a whole lot of fertilizer.I have things in mind that I know I'd eat. I'm having a hard time finding definitive information about whether these things would grow easily where I live:delicata squashgarlic chivessweet potatoromanescoAre these going to be difficult for a beginner? Any advice? I know the squash needs a lot of room and a lot of direct sunlight,

why did the seeds become like this? Why are they different colors?

Yearly planting planner?

Image
This might be a dumb question, but is there a planner app or something available that you can input your zone and see what to plant year round? I love the idea of planting food to enjoy all year, but I'm also a complete noob and feel overloaded with information.Something simple and easy to navigate would be great!

My beautiful chrysanthemums and petunia, the only thing I worry is coming winters with fogs and near zero temperature. How can I keep them alive during fogs and no sun?

How do I prepare for spring with a brand new garden?

Image
I moved back to my hometown in middle Europe and got a rather big garden now. It’s been pretty neglected, some thuja hedges seem on the brink of dying partly because of the scorching summer and bramble has taken over. Since the region has apparently good soil and produces a lot of fruits and veggies, I’m planning to make this a hobby-project in spring and have ordered some veggie and herb seeds. The garden already has an elderberry-, cherry- and hazelnut tree. Currants, a tiny apple and plum tree (planted last spring) and even a Japanese cherry tree for whatever reason. All rather neglected but they seem to do fine. Now the question: when can I start to get rid of the bramble, plant, fertilize and cut back stuff in that garden? It’s December, yes, but I think planning in advance might save me a ton of stress figuring this out in springtime. Anyone has an idea what I already can do or should prepare for? I’m new to gardening and grateful for tips!

Roundup question

Image
A couple of months ago I sprayed my vegetable garden with Roundup as it was overgrown and weedy and I just wanted to start from scratch. Please save me the “roundup is carcinogenic” talk, what’s done is done. My question is, since then, anything I’ve planted is suffering, and I’m wondering if it’s the roundup, and what I can do to fix this. My understanding is that glyphosate becomes inert once it is in the soil, but I’ve since planted three lettuces that have died, a cucumber that has died, and about half of my pea seedlings and shriveling up and dying too. How can I make my soil healthy again?

Did I kill my Aloe Vera?

Image
This sounds dumb but yesterday I wanted to repot my Aloe. So I took it out of it's pot and waited for the new pots I ordered to arrive. They did, but then I somehow was too lazy and tired and told myself I'd just do it tomorrow, and I read something anyway on letting roots callous (?). And today when I woke up I noticed they were a little wrinkly and dry and immediately repotted it into its new soil, but I'm still kind of scared it might've killed the plant. I'd say it was without soil close to 24 hours. What do I do?
