leeks growing directly from flower head - wha'?

Many months ago I planted the bottoms of two grocery store leeks. Eventually both flowered. One of them is doing the normal going to seed. The other one grew these slim green tendrils. Today I pulled off one of the tendrils at its base, and it's bulb shaped at the bottom. There were about 20 in varying heights from 1/2" to 2". I've planted them in a pot, maybe they'll turn into leeks, or not. But I'm curious if anyone has ever seen this, is it unusual or common?
